Prayer Partners
There is a great deal in our lives that work against prayer and having a prayer partner can be a helpful way to begin when you are trying to make regular prayer a habit in your life. It is also an excellent way to develop encouraging and supportive spiritual friendships.
Agree together on a time and place to gather for prayer. It could be ten minutes between classes or an hour together. Start small (twenty minutes or half and hour) before trying to embark prayer marathon.
Communication is key when praying together. Take a few moments to agree on what you will be praying about. This doesn’t have to become a rigid framework, but it helps to start on the same page.
You can share prayer concerns before you begin, but remember that this is a prayer time. Don’t spend all your time sharing with each other. In addition, don’t try to give counsel to each other before you have brought your concerns to the Great Counselor.
To make it a shared prayer time it is best for each person to pray about one thing at a time and then give room for the other person to elaborate on that prayer concern or to move on to another topic of prayer. It is very difficult when one member of a prayer team prays at length about multiple subjects. It may leave the other partner wondering what is left to pray about or feeling uncomfortable about returning to something earlier in the other person’s prayer that they really wanted to pray about as well.
